Mount Tambora trekking provides an opportunity for a hiking expedition to the largest volcanic caldera of Mount Tambora, situated on Sumbawa Island. An overland round-trip journey commences from Lombok by car, leading to the starting point at Desa Pancasila.

It holds a notable historical record of an eruption in 1815, which is estimated to have expelled 160 cubic kilometers of material, receiving a rating of 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. This occurrence is acknowledged as the largest volcanic eruption in documented history.

Itinerary:

Day 01: Lombok – Labuan Jambu Sumbawa Besar, overnight at the hotel.

  • 07:00 Depart for Kayangan harbor to board the public ferry to Pototano port, Sumbawa.
  • 09:30 Arrive at the harbor and continue with the public ferry crossing to Sumbawa Island.
  • 11:30 Reach Pototano harbor and proceed to drive to Sumbawa Besar city. Along the route, you will enjoy views of the coastline and agricultural fields.
  • 13:30 Arrive in Sumbawa Besar city and stop for lunch.
  • 14:30 Lunch finish, continue the drive to Labuan Jambu, with more captivating views to explore along the way.
  • 17:30 Arrive at Labuan Jambu – Check in at the hotel.
  • 19:00 Dinner served at the hotel.

Day 02: Sumbawa Besar – Desa Pancasila – Entrance gate – Pos 1

  • 06:00 Check out of the hotel and depart for Desa Pancasila. Stops will be made along the way for breaks and lunch.
  • 13:00 Arrive at the starting point at Desa Pancasila. Enjoy a coffee break while meeting and receiving a briefing from your guide.
  • 14:30 Begin the trek to the campsite at Pos 1, walking through a coffee plantation.
  • 16:30 Arrive at the campsite at Pos 1 and set up the tent for the night.
  • 19:00 Dinner at the campsite prepared by your guide and porter.

Day 03: Position 1 – Position 5 – Cemara Tunggal campsite

  • 07:00 Relish the morning ambiance of the forest while partaking in your breakfast.
  • 08:00 Commence the trek, walking for 2 hours to reach the Pos 2 rest area. After a brief rest and replenishing your water supply, proceed to Pos 3, traversing through the dense forest.
  • 12:00 Arrive at the Pos 3 rest area, where you will pause for lunch.
  • 13:00 After lunch, continue the trek, ascending the steeper path towards the campsite at Cemara Tunggal.
  • 16:00 Anticipate reaching the Cemara Tunggal campsite – set up your tent for camping. Take pleasure in the view of the savanna grassland from the campsite.
  • 18:30 Savor the sunset and dinner at the campsite, served by your guide and porter.

Day 04: Cemara Tunggal – Mount Tambora Summit – Desa Pancasila

  • 04:00 Begin the ascent to the summit of Mount Tambora, walking through a combination of savanna grassland and volcanic desert.
  • 05:30 Arrive at the summit of Mount Tambora, where you can enjoy the stunning view and sunrise from the peak.
  • 06:30 Descend back to the campsite via the same route.
  • 08:00 Reach the campsite, take some time to rest, and enjoy breakfast.
  • 09:00 Depart from the campsite, descending back to Desa Pancasila along the trekking paths. A stop for rest and lunch will be made on the way down.
  • 17:00 Conclude the trek at Desa Pancasila – Check into a homestay for the night.

Day 05: Desa Pancasila – Sumbawa Besar – Lombok

  • 05:00 Depart from the hotel to Lombok, traveling through Cabang Bangi Dompu, Sumbawa Besar, and Pototano.
  • 12:00 Take a break for lunch in Sumbawa Besar.
  • 13:00 Depart to Pototano port to board the public ferry to Lombok.
  • 15:30 Reach Pototano port and board the public ferry heading to Lombok.
  • 17:30 Arrive at Kayangan harbor in Lombok and transfer to your designated drop-off point.
